Are you looking for the perfect text to read to your upper KS2 class these dark afternoons? Try
'My swordhand is singing' by Marcus Sedgwick (no relation!) Drawing from the folktales of Eastern Europe, carefully reseached and beautifully written ,Sedgwick's story is full of brooding menace. It makes most vampire legends seems crude and silly. never has the quiet of the forest seemed so threatening. A worthy candidate for the Carnegie medal short list.

Message from Croydon schools
We had our first network meeting and developed a questionnaire for our children. It will be used to measure the change in children's attitudes and enjoyment of reading at the beginning and end of the project.

Iron Man
My year 4 class have had great fun working through the Iron Man sequence - it has made an appreciable difference already to the enthusiasm for reading and writing of my under achieving boys. One idea that went down well was to create camera phone pictures of the Iron Man's challenge to the Dragon - though some did spend ages designing the phone rather than the picture
