I had not seen the film, although I knew that it was about concentration camps. Bruno's innocence made it a compelling read and I could not put the book down. I have a lasting image of Bruno and his friend holding hands, dying in the gas chamber. I found it to be a very sad story.

I have seen the film, and so knew the ending. However, I thought the book was so much better than the film, as the main character, Bruno, does not describe the awful scenes, but left the reader to imagine them. His innocence comes through clearly, with his utter confusion of what was going on; even to the very last moment. I much preferred the first person style of writing, as it allowed you to enter Bruno's mind, where as I don't remember that from the film, (although it was a long time ago that I watched it!)
Do you think the book would be suitable for year 6 to read? Some of mine have seen me with the book and have wanted to read it, but at present I've said no.
